Jim Jones rose to prominence as a preacher advocating racial equality and social justice, founding the People’s Temple in the 1950s. Initially seen as a progressive movement, it devolved into a manipulative cult under Jones’ authoritarian control. In 1978, the group relocated to Jonestown, Guyana, where life turned oppressive. Jones orchestrated the deaths of over 900 people in a mass murder-suicide, marking one of history's most devastating cult tragedies.
